Choropleth Map Accuracy: Characteristics of the Data

نویسنده

چکیده

The accuracy of maps based on aggregate data is dependent upon (a) the extent to which aggregate values calculated for each enumeration unit are representative of the entire unit and, (b) the data classification system used to assign these values to classes. Size and compactness of these units as well as the variability of the distribution mapped are important factors in determining the accuracy of aggregate values calculated for the units. In this study, the individual and relative importance of these enumeration unit and surface characteristics are examined. Analysis indicates that all three variables exert a significant influence on accuracy of aggregate values with surface variation accounting for the greatest portion of the varia tion in accuracy.

Accuracy of Thematic Maps / Implications of Choropleth Symbolization

Accuracy of thematic maps is identified as having two components: planimetric accuracy and data representation accuracy. The first is of only minor concern for thematic maps. Data representation accuracy, however, is at least as significant to map effectiveness as are the perceptual and cognitive aspects of map reading that have been given so much attention in recent years. The focus of the stu...

Choosing Geographic Units for Choropleth Rate Maps, with an Emphasis on Public Health Applications

Choropleth maps are the most widely used map type for mapping rates, such as those involving disease, crime, and socioeconomic indicators. The essential step of choosing a geographic unit to map is often made in an ad hoc manner. Among the desirable characteristics of choropleth mapping units are high degree of resolution, homogeneity of population size, homogeneity of land area, observation of...

Evaluation of Methods for Classifying Epidemiological Data on Choropleth Maps in Series

Our research goal was to determine which choropleth classification methods are most suitable for epidemiological rate maps. We compared seven methods using responses by fifty-six subjects in a two-part experiment involving nine series of U.S. mortality maps. Subjects answered a wide range of general map-reading questions that involved individual maps and comparisons among maps in a series. The ...

ChoroWare: A Software Toolkit for Choropleth Map Classifications

When exploratory spatial data analyses are conducted, choropleth mapping is an important means to display 1) the patterns of the spatial observations for enumeration areas, such as counties or Census Tracts, and 2) the resulting spatial statistical outcomes. Choropleth maps group spatial observations into classes and each class is then assigned a particular color that is used to shade the enume...

Sonification of Geo-referended Data for Auditory Information Seeking: Design Principle and Pilot Study

We present an Auditory Information Seeking Principle (AISP) (gist, navigate, filter, and details-on-demand) modeled after the visual information seeking mantra [1]. We propose that data sonification designs should conform to this principle. We also present some design challenges imposed by human auditory perception characteristics. To improve blind access to georeferenced statistical data, we d...
